The green and fertile island of Shapinsay lies a pleasant 25 minute crossing by ferry from Kirkwall. The MV Shapinsay operates a regular service throughout the year.
The detached cottage named Iona is situated at Elwick Bay on the south of the island only a few minutes away from the pier, the village and Balfour Castle. Iona cottage gets its name from the SS Iona who plied to and from the island for 70 years until her service came to an end when she sank at Shapinsay pier during a storm in November 1964. Her hull was beached on the shore of Elwick Bay, where she still lies today.

Iona cottage is a pleasant walk from the ferry terminal, Balfour Castle and Balfour Village which has a well stocked store, a restaurant and Heritage centre. Hilton Farmhouse Conservatory & Smithy restaurant is also nearby offering a wonderful dining experience. Places of interest on Shapinsay include the Milldam, RSPB Reserve, resident crafters, beaches and historic area of interest such as a WW2 battery encampment.

1. Deposit: 25% of full rate should be sent at time of booking. Confirmation of booking will be sent on receipt of deposit. The deposit is not refundable except where accommodation is not available for dates required.
2. General cleaning and maintenance of the property is the hirer’s responsibility during their stay. A minimum charge of £25 will be made if the property is not left as it was found. A cleaning service can be arranged during your stay if required.
3. Balance: payable on collection of the keys.
4. Cancellation: Notice of cancellation must be sent in writing or e-mail. If booking is cancelled less than three weeks before arrival the full cost will be charged.
5. Number of occupants must not exceed number for which beds are provided.
6. Breakages, loss or damage to the property must be reported, and where necessary paid for, before departure. 7. Arrival time is after 2.30pm and departure time is before 10.30am. Weekly bookings normally run from Saturday to Saturday.
8. There is No Smoking in any of the accommodation.
9. The owners reserve the right, under circumstances beyond their control, e.g. fire damage or interruption of utility supplies, to cancel a booking and return all payments made in full.
