About Fordhead

The area is of considerable importance historically. Indeed the ford which is situated some 70 yards west of the cottage over the river Forth (hence the name Fordhead), has been used by such notables as Bonnie Prince Charlie, Rob Roy MacGregor and William Wallace. Nearby at Lake of Menteith, Inchmahome Priory is situated on an idyllic island which can be reached by means of a short, charming boat journey. This tranquil isle provided a home for the young Mary Queen of Scots before her exile to France.
